Resonance & Dissonance

(Connecting with the music - wk 3)

The past couple of weeks of connecting with the music as we dance (aka vibin’) has been so great, friend. Thank you so much for joining me. I can’t wait to hear more about what you’ve been noticing, observing, and sensing with it all.

We’re going to continue with this focus again, but with just a bit more specificity this week…….

One of the things that really came up for me last week, was noticing the spectrum of sensing resonance vs dissonance.

By resonance I just mean when we feel really aligned and in harmony with the music (or vibes, more broadly speaking)…

And by dissonance I mean when we felt disconnected with, off of, or at odds with/clashing with the music (or vibes around us)…

Ahhhhh resonance. So delicious! I love tuning into, connecting with, and letting the music move me. I love that sensation of harmony and oneness. We’ve mostly focused on tuning into that sensation these past few weeks, so I won't write too much more about that today… but…. what this focus has had me really pondering lately is how we might experience the other end of the spectrum: dissonance.

I think in the past, I would’ve thought unfavorably of dissonance. But with this focus, I’ve actually really been appreciating the sensations of dissonance when they arise. Not necessarily enjoying them when they occur… but I’m feeling more grateful for them.

Here’s what this focus has me pondering lately….

1). When might the experience of dissonance be an important sign? For example, when might dissonance be my body’s signal to me that this person, place, activity, vibe, etc. isn’t for me, and that it’s time to go…

2). Might dissonance simply show we are on different wavelength than someone else right now? Another person’s current vibe doesn’t have to be right or wrong… perhaps it can simply be what it is (and it can stay theirs)… What if we don’t have to join or match the vibes of others around us? What if we just allow for the difference (the dissonance) to exist?

3). Alternatively, when might dissonance be a sign that I should perhaps do something to shift my own vibe? What might help me do so?

4). When might I want to join in and blend with the vibe around me, vs. when might I want to sustain my own vibe bubble? :)

5). Can recognizing my experience of discomfort as dissonance help me be more ok with it (so that I don’t just quickly match the vibe around me)? Can recognizing the dissonance help me sustain my own vibe?

6). Might dissonance be a sign that some boundaries could be helpful?

7). Can we increase our tolerance for dissonance? How might that be helpful? Can I get more comfortable with the discomfort?

Thoughts, friend?

Does any of this resonate? Or… disonate? :)

As always, can’t wait to hear about what you’ve noticed this past week too (and see what we discover together next)! See you soon!

💛 Dani
